The Best Kind of Busy

It has been the busiest holiday photo season The Backyard Boutique has ever seen!  I am overwhelmed with gratitude for all of my new and repeat clients for making this year such a roaring success.  I would be remiss if I didn't also thank my mom and best friend for keeping an eye on my little girl when both her dad and I had to work!

With so many beautiful families photographed this year, this is just part one of photos from the holiday season rush!

It is never too early to schedule your Spring photo session; buds will be blooming before you know it!

It's the Most Beautiful Time of the Year

It's no secret that Fall is universally beloved, and if you are a sane person, it's your favorite season of the year.  Although I revile all things pumpkin spice, I still welcome the cool, crisp weather with wide open arms.  This year, the Fall season upped the ante with numerous celestial events, including a super blood moon lunar eclipse, a meteor shower and easy viewing of FIVE different planets.

The show in the sky combined with the usual autumnal change of colors happening in the trees, I'm starting to think Mother Nature is just showing off.

Lucky for me, this beauty is easy to take advantage of to snap some seasonal family photos.  I love my job.

Brand Spankin' New

Newborn babies are squishy and cute and sleepy and sweet and REALLY hard to take care of.  I think most new moms find themselves sitting with their new baby at some point thinking "Wow. This is super hard.  Why didn't anyone tell me it would be this hard?  THEY ALL LIED!"

If you're half as fortunate as I am,  someone, or many someones DID tell you how hard it would be. Unfortunately, the natural smugness that comes with growing a human inside of your body doesn't allow you to absorb this information.  Pregnancy smugness allows you to believe it will somehow be different and easier for you.  It won't be.  But if you're reading this and pregnant, enjoy your delusion while it lasts.

For all their helplessness and impossible to understand cries, newborns are extraordinary.  It is a special time in the life of a new family and it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to be welcomed into the home of a stranger to capture the magic.

There is nothing like the glow of a new mom.

Dad is a mechanic.  This isn't where he always sleeps.

Everything's Coming up Baby

You know the phenomenon that occurs when you start driving a new car?  Suddenly you see "your" car everywhere on the road.  I'm certain there is some psychological explanation for the human tendency to become more aware of others in circumstances similar to their own.  Empathy?  Maybe.  Whatever it's called, it also happens when you're pregnant.  Friends, acquaintances, perfect strangers - round, pregnant bellies everywhere you turn.  In pregnancy, child birth and child rearing, it is awesome, exciting and INVALUABLE to have a community of ladies who know just what you're going through - at the same time that you are going through it.  Even if you have the best mom (I DO!), aunts, older cousins, whatever - time fades the memory.  That, I am SURE is a biological mechanism to ensure the survival of the human race.  No one would have more than one child if the sensations, emotions and experiences of all things surrounding pregnancy, birth and the early days of caring for a newborn remained as raw and vivid as they were while they happened.

Lucky me.  My best friend had her second daughter 6 months before I had a girl of my own.  A former co-worker and current friend had her little girl about 4 weeks after I welcomed a baby into my world.  I met some great ladies in a pre-natal yoga class.  My sister in law will bring her baby girl into this world in a few short weeks.  I love having all of these hearts and minds to share this journey with.

Funny enough, some clients (who I call friends) also decided that the Spring and Summer seemed like a great time for the world to meet some new people.  As usual, I love being a part of, and documenting these marvelous moments.  It was incredibly special since I was in the same baby boat.

Three under 3.  Superheros.

Hope you enjoyed all these cute faces and round bellies!

Back to Work

My beautiful baby girl arrived just before sunrise on April 9.  Thirteen weeks later and I've joined the hoards of mothers everywhere that chant "Enjoy every moment! It goes by so fast!".  I rolled my eyes unapologetically at that phrase during the first few weeks of motherhood.  Everything hurts, you don't sleep, you're learning a brand new job, and your tiny, helpless baby is just not sure why it's so loud and bright.  Not every moment is enjoyable, and that's ok.  A newborn baby can only cry to let you know when something is wrong.  And sometimes, there isn't a damn thing you can do about it other than hold them and sing or shush or tell them it's all ok.  Then she smiles at you for the first time.  Just a glimpse of another form of communication that lets you know that you're doing your best and that is enough.  It really does "take a village" and I have the best one a new mom could ask for.  Thank you.

Back to business!  The Backyard Boutique had a brief hiatus while I finished up those last SUPER COMFORTABLE weeks of pregnancy and recovered from giving birth.  Lucky for me, my clients were happy to keep a tentative schedule as I adjusted to my new normal.  It was really refreshing and meaningful to get back behind the camera and learn, in practice, that I could manage having the two best jobs in the world.

My first post partum photo shoot and my new favorite subject.

Thanks for sticking around!
